Yoga

Nowadays people think of yoga as a system of exercises but it was developed
5,000 years ago to be much more than that.  The wise old yogis created the
practices of yoga to harmonize the energies of the mind and body to come
more in tune with the natural forces of nature.

The yogis recognized that one of the big components of a human being is the heart - the center
of emotions.  We can tune our body like crazy and become super smart but what about those
emotions?  We never know what's going to happen with them so we try to control them and
suppress them.  Thankfully the ancient yogis knew that really wasn't the way.

They knew that our "wild" emotions were a crucial part of bringing the human being into
consciousness.  They knew that emotions were not given to us by mistake.  Rather than get rid
of emotions, the yogis developed a system that harnessed their energy to connect relationally.

To practice yoga in the deepest sense is to embrace a developing self awareness by observing
our lives, thoughts, words, and actions.  The old yogis understood the critical role the body and
mind play in the development and transformation of our character.

By acknowledging and embracing the power in ourselves we increase our compassion, quieting
the inner critic.  What evolves is a calm, quiet space from which a new voice can emerge.  Once
we change our internal dialogue we can make healthier choices about our actions.  From choice
comes freedom.  From freedom comes wholeness.

As a philosophy of life, yoga requires that we commit ourselves to compassionately face our
limitations in order to realize our unlimited potential.  The therapeutic work I do is influenced
by the wisdom and compassion of these teachings of Yoga.
